Connecting Flights

If direct flights don’t fit your schedule or budget, here are the common connecting hubs:

Miami (MIA)Charlotte (CLT)Atlanta (ATL)Fort Lauderdale (FLL)
  • Most Jamaica flights from the Midwest route through Miami or Charlotte — both are efficient for international connections.
  • Kingston (KIN) airport is inconvenient for resort areas. For Negril, Montego Bay, and Ocho Rios, fly into Montego Bay (MBJ).
  • If staying in Port Antonio or Kingston, flying into KIN is worthwhile despite fewer connections.
  • Minimum 90-minute layover strongly recommended — Jamaica immigration can be slow on the return leg.
3

Time Zone

Jamaica uses Eastern Standard Time (EST) year-round and does not observe daylight saving. Same time as Chicago from November to March; 1 hour behind Chicago from April to October.

4

Airport → Resort Transfer

Montego Bay airport (MBJ) serves the three main resort zones: Montego Bay (~15 min), Ocho Rios (~90 min), and Negril (~90 min). Pick your hotel based on tolerable drive time, not just price.

Shared Shuttle

$25–40 USD per person, shared bus (included with most tour operator packages).

Private Transfer

$80–160 USD per private vehicle, depending on destination (Negril and Ocho Rios cost more).

Travel Time

15 minutes to Montego Bay hotels; 75–90 minutes to Ocho Rios; 80–100 minutes to Negril. Expect longer in peak traffic.

Knutsford Express regional bus: ~$20 USD, scheduled service between resort towns. Not airport-direct.

Transfer Tips

  • Use ONLY the pre-arranged transfer desk inside the arrivals hall, not touts in the parking lot.
  • If your resort is in Negril or Ocho Rios, ask for a rest/bathroom stop — the drive is long and winding.
  • Tipping is standard for Jamaica transfers: $5–10 USD per couple for a shared shuttle, $15–20 for a private vehicle.

Ukrainian Travelers

Traveling on a Ukrainian passport? Read this first.

Jamaica generally allows Ukrainian passport holders to enter as tourists without a visa for short stays. Your US immigration status is independent of Jamaica entry, but you do need to ensure your US re-entry documents are in order before leaving the country.

Visa

No tourist visa required for short stays. You will also need to complete a free online travel authorization form (the C5 Immigration & Customs Form) before arrival.

Documents to bring

  • Ukrainian biometric passport (valid 6+ months beyond trip)
  • US immigration status document required for re-entry to the US
  • Online C5 Immigration & Customs Form (free, completed before travel)
  • Printed resort confirmation
  • Return ticket
  • Travel insurance (strongly recommended)

Entry requirements change periodically. Verify current requirements with the Jamaican consulate and your airline before traveling.

FAQ

Common Questions

Do Ukrainians need a visa for Jamaica?

Not a traditional visa. Ukrainian passport holders are typically allowed short tourist stays without a visa, but you must complete the online C5 Immigration & Customs Form before arrival. Always verify current requirements with the Jamaican consulate before traveling.

What currency does Jamaica use?

Jamaican dollar (JMD), but US dollars are accepted everywhere tourists go. Resort bills are almost always in USD. Bring small US bills for tips.

Is tap water safe to drink in Jamaica?

Tap water is considered safe at most resort areas, but bottled water is still recommended for sensitive travelers. All-inclusive resorts provide purified water.

Which Jamaica airport should I fly into?

Montego Bay (MBJ) for any resort in Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, or Negril — which is over 95% of tourists. Fly into Kingston (KIN) only if you are staying in Kingston or Port Antonio.

What is the best time of year to visit Jamaica?

Mid-December through mid-April is peak dry season with excellent weather. May and November are our favorite value months — still sunny, much cheaper, smaller crowds. Hurricane season runs June through October.
