Connecting Flights

If direct flights don’t fit your schedule or budget, here are the common connecting hubs:

Miami (MIA)Atlanta (ATL)Houston (IAH)Dallas (DFW)Charlotte (CLT)
  • Book a minimum 90-minute layover on international connections — immigration lines in MIA/IAH are notorious.
  • If connecting internationally, you don't re-check bags at the hub if they’re tagged through to CUN. Still confirm with the gate agent.
  • Terminal changes are common on connecting routes. Give yourself buffer in unfamiliar airports.
3

Time Zone

Cancun uses Eastern Standard Time (EST) year-round. It does not observe daylight saving. Same as Chicago Nov–Mar; 1 hour behind Apr–Oct.

4

Airport → Resort Transfer

Cancun resort areas use a 1–4 zone system. Most all-inclusives are in Zones 3–4 (Hotel Zone and Riviera Maya).

Shared Shuttle

$20–35 USD per person, shared van.

Private Transfer

$60–90 USD per private vehicle (up to 8 pax).

Travel Time

20–45 minutes to most Hotel Zone resorts; up to 75 minutes for Riviera Maya (Playa del Carmen, Tulum).

ADO bus to downtown Cancun: ~$10 USD per person. Not recommended if you have luggage and a young family.

Transfer Tips

  • Pre-book your transfer. Do NOT take the first offer from touts at the arrivals exit.
  • Ignore anyone in a white polo shirt with a clipboard — they’re timeshare salespeople.
  • Your official transfer driver will have a name sign and be in a marked vehicle.

Ukrainian Travelers

Traveling on a Ukrainian passport? Read this first.

Mexico does not require a visa for most tourist visits, and your US immigration status (TPS, parole, visa, EAD) is independent from your entry into Mexico. Tourists receive a free FMM tourist card on arrival.

Visa

No visa required for Mexico. You’ll receive an FMM tourist card at immigration — keep it safe, you need it to leave the country.

Documents to bring

  • Ukrainian biometric passport (valid 6+ months beyond trip)
  • US immigration status document (TPS, parole, visa, EAD — whichever applies)
  • Travel insurance (strongly recommended)
  • Printed hotel confirmation (immigration may ask)
  • Return ticket (may be asked at check-in)

Entry requirements can and do change. Verify current requirements with the Mexican consulate in Chicago before you travel.

FAQ

Common Questions

Do Ukrainians need a visa for Mexico?

No. Mexico allows visa-free tourist entry for Ukrainian passport holders in most cases, via an FMM tourist card issued free at immigration. Always verify with the Mexican consulate before traveling, as requirements change.

What currency does Cancun use?

Mexican peso (MXN), but US dollars are accepted almost everywhere tourists go. Bring small bills for tips.

Is tap water safe to drink in Cancun?

No. Drink purified or bottled water only. All-inclusive resorts provide purified water. Sensitive travelers should also use it for brushing teeth.

Is Cancun safe for tourists?

The resort strip (Hotel Zone), Riviera Maya, and major attractions are very safe. Exercise normal big-city caution: don’t wander off the beaten path at night, use hotel safes for valuables.

What’s the best time of year to visit Cancun?

December–April has the best weather (dry, 80s°F). May and November are our favorite sweet spots — still sunny, smaller crowds, better prices. June–October is hurricane season with the best discounts but weather risk.
